Lighting Efficiency Project at Fiumicino

Towards a More Efficient and Sustainable Airport

Aeroporti di Roma, within the framework of the regional programme FESR Lazio 2021–2027 – Energy Efficiency and Renewables for Businesses, is implementing an energy efficiency upgrade of the artificial lighting system in the Cargo City, PR18, and Varco 5 areas at Fiumicino Airport. The project has been awarded €47,245.16 in funding through a call for proposals from Regione Lazio – Lazio Innova.

The Intervention

The operation involves replacing the existing lighting system with LED technology, which is more efficient and sustainable, through a relamping intervention:

  • Cargo City Area: Replacement of 150W high-pressure sodium discharge lamps with 27.5W LED fixtures.
  • PR18 and Varco 5 Areas: Relamping of seven light towers, with the replacement of:
    • 4 towers with Magnum 3100 220W lamps → replaced with TAURUS 400/GL20 200W LED lamps.
    • 3 towers with 1000W lamps → replaced with high-efficiency LED lamps.

The Benefits of LED Technology

The adoption of LED technology offers numerous advantages:
  • Up to 82% energy savings on street lighting.
  • Lifespan up to 50,000 hours, compared to 2,000 hours for halogen bulbs.
  • Lower maintenance and operating costs.
  • Improved visual comfort and lighting quality.
  • Low environmental impact, with no harmful emissions or chemical substances.

Expected Energy Results

Area Pre-Consumption (MWh/year) Post-Consumption (MWh/year) Energy Saving %
Cargo City 125,88 23,08 81,67%
PR-18 Varco 5 195,37 90,58 53,64%

A Step Towards Sustainability

This project further demonstrates ADR's commitment to the ecological transition and the continuous improvement of energy efficiency in its infrastructure. It forms part of a broader corporate strategy focused on environmental sustainability, carbon footprint reduction, and responsible innovation.
