From 12 February 2024, in celebration of Aeroporti di Roma's 50th anniversary, the ‘Piazza’ in Terminal 1 departures will display three 14th-century stained-glass windows from the Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence, attributed to Giotto and owned by the Fondo Edifici di Culto (FEC) of the Ministry of the Interior. Also thanks to the collaboration with the FEC, from 12 April to 31 August 2023, the airport had on display the ‘Salvator Mundi’, the last work signed by another great Italian maestro, Giovan Lorenzo Bernini. This gave the more than 6 million passengers passing through the area the unique opportunity to admire this timeless artwork, including with guided tours open to everyone.
There are also partnerships in the musical sphere, with the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia: concerts for passengers, opera performances and flashmobs in the ‘Piazza’ of Terminal 1 departures periodically transform ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ Airport into a huge stage.
Contemporary forms of art are also explored at Fiumicino airport, including ‘Master of Mistakes’ by Daniele Sigalot, ‘Vertigine’ by Manuel Felisi, or ‘Deti’ (the Cyrillic for ‘Children’) by Marco Lodola, in departures area A in Terminal 1, which is a tribute to Picasso's famous dove and, with its colours reminiscent of the flag of peace, is intended as a reminder.
On arriving at Terminal 1 Departures, you only have to look up to see the work of the street artist TvBoy, created as an expression of the desire to return to travelling after the pandemic, visible to everyone on the outside wall of Terminal 1, with an ironic representation of Leonardo da Vinci, the genius after whom Fiumicino Airport was named, and the Mona Lisa: the two are depicted as travelling companions, with Mona Lisa holding a face mask in her hand as symbol of the desire for freedom, to travel and to leave behind the difficult period of Covid-19.
Finally, on 3 August 2023, the Mundys Group inaugurated ‘Moving Data’, an installation intended to raise awareness among passengers on sustainable travel, created by data artist Davide Asker. With WOA Creative Company, Asker has harmoniously combined technology and creativity in this installation which accompanies visitors in a unique exploration of the world of mobility. Passengers entering the installation find themselves in a mirrored structure that uses lights in a play of reflections and perspectives to give people the sensation of moving through an infinite space (until 20 September 2023).
