The Sangiovese grape is the most widely grown in the area and is what makes these red wines of the region so special. The Chianti Classico, Brunello and the Super Tuscans are all made almost exclusively from this grape.  There are plenty of wineries to choose from if you are planning a Tuscany wine tasting experience. Salcheto, Montepulciano

Located in the historic Vina Noble District of Siena, this is considered one of the best wineries in Tuscany’s wine region. Salco is the name for a Willow tree in Tuscan, the branches of which were used to bind the vines. The word Salcheto comes from the small stream that runs the parameter of the winery in the village of Montepulciano. A sustainable winery that celebrates the Sangiovese grape, the wine they make is sulphate free and uses indigenous yeasts for fermentation. They are famed for their reds, rosés and whites. Using strictly organic products from their viticulture and an off-the-grid model for maximum efficiency and innovation, this place is not to be missed. They have recently unveiled the Bordolese Toscanella, a new bottle that is the lightest and most eco-friendly on the market.

Castiglion del Bosco, Montalcino

Located in the heart of Tuscany wine country in the small hill town of Montalcino. Tours are arranged by reservation only and are the perfect option for someone looking for a perfectly tailored wine tasting experience. Starting with a visit to the Capanna vineyard, you can follow with a tour of the winery and finishing with a tasting of their most exquisite wines. This includes their famed Brunello di Montalcino paired with a selection of Tuscan cheeses, bread and olive oil.Castello di Ama, Chianti Classico

Located in the heart of Chianti Classico and set amongst rolling hills and stunning countryside this winery offers Tuscany wine tasting at its best. The vineyards are set in a 12th century castle that has been lovingly restored and has incredible wine themed art installations. You can enjoy works such as Daniel Buren’s mirror wall or Anish Kapoor’s ‘Aima’. Their fine wine Haiku Chianti Classico is a must try while you are there with silky fresh notes.  They also possess a state-of-the-art olive oil mill,and produce some of the best olive oil in the region.  A great way to try their wines paired with delicious cuisine is to book a table at the Il Ristoro di Ama.

Antinori, San Casciano

Geometrical vineyards and an almost hidden winery set underground, this historical winery is located just 20km from Florence. The Antinori family have been winemakers since the 14th century and here you will find two of Italy’s best wines: Tignanello and Solaia. The impressive new building has been designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti and the interior boasts 600 years of wine making on display. These is also a book shop, a restaurant, and an art gallery. Guided tours run every hour and private tours can be booked in advance. Most definitely one to add to your Tuscany wine tour.

Castello di Nippozano, Pelago

This 1000-year-old fairytale castle is in the heart of the Chianti Rufina region overlooking the Arno River and a great addition to any Tuscan wine tasting experience. The Frescobaldi family have been making top quality vintages for over 700 years, making them some of the most prestigious producers in the region. Scheduled tours are available of the cellars and of the castle; take a stroll through the vineyards and take in the majestic views over the Tuscan hills. Enjoy sampling some of their wines including the ‘basic’ Toscano IGT and the prestigious Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG. Lunch is available at the castle as well as accommodation if you want to stay longer in this picture-perfect setting. If you do stay, make sure you see the sunset from one of the many terraces.
