The nightlife in Italy: the best cities for nighttime

The nightlife in Italy is an integral part of the culture: the Italians love a good night out.  In Italy’s most famous and best loved cities there is a fantastic combination of history with modern contemporary vibes on an evening out. In Italy everything starts late and goes on into the early hours. Do as the Italians do by kicking off the evening with aperitifs in a chic cocktail bar followed by dancing at exclusive clubs or live music in an atmospheric bar.  With a vibrant and infectious atmosphere, a night out in Italy is bound to leave you wanting more.

The best night out: the Italian way

Every great Italian night out starts with an Aperitif, which can happen anywhere between 6pm and 9pm when   Italians  enjoy something to drink and a nibble. This tradition started in Turin with the invention of vermouth, and then the tradition spread throughout Italy. Italian cities are transformed as night falls. Lively nightlife, cultural tours and evening entertainment make some destinations perfect for night-time explorations. In this article we will explore the chic and dazzling Milan nightlife, to Florence’s unique mix of Renaissance charm and contemporary culture. So, get your dancing shoes at the ready and let’s go!

Milan: chic and elegance to get you dancing

Milan’s status as a global fashion hub is seen in its second-to-none nightlife, attracting crowds from all different backgrounds, tastes and cultures. The nightlife in Milan is some of the best in Italy.  Start your evening with the traditional aperitif of a glass of Prosecco, an Aperol spritz or a Negroni. Top aperitif spots are Terrazza Aperol, with stunning views over the Piazza del Duomo; or the lovely rooftop of Coin, or head to the banks of the Navigli Canal and sit at one of the many open-air bars. After your aperitif, the evening is still young, and you can stay in the trendy Navigli district where you will find many clubs and pubs to enjoy a dance in. There are a wide range of clubs such as the Rocket Club, with DJs nightly, or Le Scimmie for live bands.

Rome: endless fun with traditional style

Nightlife in Rome has everything you could wish for, from cozy dive bars, live music venues to open air cafés. Because Rome is so vast, people usually plan their evening out in a specific district. Some popular districts are Monti, Testaccio and Ostiense. Head over to Osteria delle Coppelle, another one of Rome’s trendiest districts, where you will find Jerry Thomas Speakeasy, serving excellent cocktails in an intimate and cool atmosphere; or hit the dancefloor at Vinile, a retro swing and jazz bar.  For a unique outdoor aperitif head to the former harbour barge turned bar named Baja, that floats along the Tiber Banks offering spectacular views and a romantic ambiance.

Palermo: fun after sunset

Nightlife in Palermo is full of variety and great for those who love cozy clubs and atmospheric bars. In the Centro Storico you will find many cute spots, tucked away in crumbling alleys and in old Piazzas such as Champagneria, and the Piazza Sant’ Anna, with interesting places to enjoy a beverage. If it’s late night fun you are after then head to La Vucciria, after 8 pm this market comes to life and transforms into a lively nightlife scene with street food vendors and then dancing until sunrise.

Florence: where culture and history meet modernity

As well as being the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence nightlife also provides a vibrant and exciting experience for all ages and tastes. Located at the foot of the Basilica de Santa Croce, is the Santa Croce square, which is the epicentre of nightlife in Florence, full of bars, restaurants and music venues.
